Body Cream: How to choose the best types, and use it effectively

What is Body Cream?

To put it simply, when the balance between oil and water in a product is heavier towards the oil, it is called a cream.

When it comes to moisturizing your face and body, you have many options to choose from. The skin is the largest organ in the body and should be cared for with the right product. A body lotion has a light texture and coverage. Body cream, on the other hand, has a higher percentage of oil, and is thus heavier. You will usually find creams in jars or pots instead of bottles or dispensers.

If you have really dry skin, creams are the better choice. If you have normal skin, you can still use body creams in the cold winter months as your skin needs an extra boost of moisture.
Creams penetrate the skin and provide a barrier that prevents more moisture loss from the skin than lotion. Creams, however, tend to feel greasier and heavier on the skin. Which is why some people prefer to use creams at night, as they allow the body to absorb all the nutrients it needs.

Body creams can also have additional benefits, like smoothing or brightening actions. Creams are also great for moisturizing rough areas such as elbows, knees, feet, and hands. The soft and creamy texture of body creams also leaves you with a luxurious feeling, like your body has been pampered.

How to Use Body Cream?

You have a perfect skin care regime for your face. From cleansing to moisturizing, you go through every step daily and diligently. But what about the rest of your body? Somehow, we think that showering and cleaning is care enough for the skin.

But the skin on your body needs just as much tender care as your face. It is exposed to the same aggressors, like the environment and climate, which makes it susceptible to the same issues. The friction from clothing and the sheer volume that needs to be covered is also a challenge for body care.

A good care routine, however, can ensure that your skin is well-cared for. The first and most important step is to identify your skin type. Dry skin needs a specific set of products, and oily skin needs to be cared for differently.

Also, the order in which you apply or layer your products will determine their efficacy. If you apply the body care products in an improper order, they will not work effectively, and waste time and effort.

A good thumb rule to follow is to layer the products from lightest to heaviest. Heavy products will leave a layer on the skin, making it difficult for other products to penetrate. So water-based products should come first, followed by gels, then creams.

The only exception to this rule is sunscreen, which should ideally go on your skin, to protect it from the sun’s rays. You can replenish the sunscreen during the day over the body cream.

Once you have chosen the products that work for you, apply them at the right time. Slather on your body cream just after a shower, as your skin is clean and pores are open, helping them absorb maximum benefits. If you are in a particularly dry climate, do the same at night, which will give the body cream time to work on the skin without being interrupted by external factors like pollution and friction.
